A woman’s right to express herself freely and to make decisions for herself is very uncommon in The Awakening. The women characters in the novel do not allow women to do what they please because they the traditional roles of women in society limit them to focus on the needs of their families. Edna Pontellier does not feel that the traditions apply to her as she moves away from the restrictions of society. Through the characters in The Awakening who portray traditional and non-traditional womens roles in the 19th century society, Chopin indicates that the independence of a woman is unattainable unless the woman is willing to endure the struggle to strive for it.
