Daisy Miller, by Henry James, is a nouvelle that documents an American girl’s travels throughout Europe. Daisy Miller has often been referred to as an international nouvelle due to the comparisons and contrasts made between European society and American society. The contrasts of culture and class within the nouvelle are demonstrated through Daisy’s interactions with upper-class American tourists in Europe. The interactions with and the observations of Winterbourne are especially important in understanding the various themes and characters of Daisy Miller. Winterbourne’s initial meditation of Daisy’s character presents the nouvelle’s themes of stereotyping and the innocence of ignorance.
