which foreshadows the events in Joyce Carol Oates’ short story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” The protagonist, Connie, who is a superficial fifteen-year-old girl, is manipulated and lured out of her home by Arnold Friend, a man posing as a teenage boy. During her so-called “abduction,” there was a great deal of flattery and flirtation from Friend toward Connie. Because of Connie’s egotistical and dreamlike personality, it was not difficult for Friend to persuade her to leave her home willingly.
