Background of Archimedes
287 B.C-212 B.C.
Archimedes is considered to be the first person to estimate pi., and one of the three
greatest mathematicians of all time along with Newton and Gauss. His ideas and
inventions were ahead of his time, some centuries. Archimedes was known as “the great
geometer” and to this day remains as one of the last great Greek Mathematicians. As a
mathematician he was able to assault problems in two directions, utilizing both physical
and geometric arguments.
Archimedes was born in 287 B.C., in Syracuse, a Sicilian port on the Ionian Sea. He
was the son of Phidias, an astronomer. We would know more of the biography of
