“Desiree’s Baby,” by Kate Chopin, is a short story that centers on a woman and the forces that dictate her social identity. “Desiree’s Baby” can be interpreted as an autobiographical piece as well as a reflection of women’s struggle with identity during Chopin’s lifetime due to certain similarities between Desiree and Chopin. These similarities include what shaped their social identities, the perception of women during their lives, and the precarious state of stability in their lives (Wolff 37).
