Paul’s Case by Willa Cather is about a school age boy named Paul. A character study of Paul shows the struggles he has with his inner self and how he changes himself to adapt to the environment he is in. The author shows a distinct difference in Paul's personality at school or home and his personality at the picture gallery, Carnegie Hall, the theatre and in New York. At school and home Paul is depressed and wishes that he were someplace else. In contrast, he is truly happy and free spirited at the gallery, concert hall, theatre and in New York.
The story begins at a meeting with the faculty of Pittsburg High School, the school Paul attends. The author distinguishes at the very beginning that Paul is different from others his age.
