Mythology Origins in Midsummer Night's Dream

A Midsummer Night's Dream is filled with many references to mythology like many of Shakespeare's plays. In these plays, the references can be as vague as using it in a sentence, such as the leviathan, or they can be very in-depth and be an entire skeleton for the play, such as Puck. Besides these two citations, the griffin and centaur are also referred to in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The leviathan was mentioned in A Midsummer Night's Dream in the phrase that Oberon speaks "Ere the leviathan can swim a league." (scene 2.1, line 174). Oberon is saying that Puck must be quick because the leviathan is so fast and could easily traverse a league. The leviathan is a massive sea creature from many religion
