Ernest J. Gaines was a black writer who wrote the book to describe the kind of life that blacks in the Deep South had to go through. He was wanting to show that when anything went wrong, the blacks were accused and were then beaten or killed. While the book is set in the 1970's, the author wanted to show how little Deep South's way of thinking had changed. The conclusion he comes to in the end is that it is best to fight together so that every one of the old men can have their pride, as well as their first taste of power.
