How is an individual supposed to take sides on an issue when both points are exactly the same? The only differences between the two positions is one is hidden in a cloud of lies. For most of society it is much easier to hide behind the falsehoods which shield them from realizing the true nature of one’s deeds. Joseph Conrad utilizes this question as a theme in his novel, Heart of Darkness. Conrad creates a story in which he illustrates the evil behind imperialism, but the imperialists shrouded themselves in falsehoods and claimed they were trying to bring civility to Africa.
