On March 27, 1924, Sarah Louis Vaughn was born in Newark, New Jersey. She had a very modest upbringing; Vaughn’s father was a carpenter, her mother a laundress. Nonetheless, music had always been a part of her life since the very beginning. Sarah’s mother was an active choir member and pianist at their local baptist church. Her father sang folk songs and played the guitar. At age twelve, Vaughn also joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church Choir. She played the organ during the services and was a featured soloist.
Eventually, Vaughn quit school and focused more on singing. She participated in several amateur nights and talent shows. But it was her performance at Apollo Theatre’s famous “Amateur Night” that ignited her singing career.
