In the midst of formal neoclassical tragedies in 17th century France, Jean Baptist Poquelin (Moliére) composed twelve of the most brilliant and captivating comedies of all time. Born into aristocracy, Moliére preferred to poke fun at the upper class rather than associating with them. One such work, Les Fourberies de Scapin, debuted May 24th, 1671 at the Palais Royal with great success. Its elaborate stage setting, concert of twelve violins, and unmasked singers, proved to be landmark in the theatre world. Moliére’s vivacious wit and unwavering charm made Scapin even more captivating in the performance than on the page.
