During the early colonial years, black slaves did not exist. During those times, Africans roughly had the same status as indentured servants. Take for instance 25 year old mulatto servant elizabeth key. She went to court to sue her master for her freedom. According to the law, she would have free status since she was born a daughter of a free man and was baptized a christian. The court ruled in favor of keys since she produced substantial amount of evidence . Situations change for the worse for Africans. Farmers only looked out for number 1, themselves. So having indentured servants work the land would not be the best from of labor. A different alternative is needed so the owner has full control of all the situations.
