After moving into the booming town of Bannock, Montana, named after the Bannock Indians, with the hopes of striking it rich, the family was eager to unpack at the famous Montana hotel, and get to work on finding their gold. Fred found a spot on the Grasshopper creek that looked good for panning. Knowing that the gold in Bannock was 99.5 percent pure instead of the normal 95 percent reassured Fred and Susan that they’d soon be rich. Susan was hired at the Montana Hotel to work as a cook for all of the hopeful prospectors coming to the town in hundreds every day. Working there was helping pay for their room at the hotel.
