James K. Polk, often referred to as the first “dark horse” president, he was the last of the Jacksonians to sit in the White House. He was also the last strong President until the Civil War. Polk was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in 1795. When he was eleven his family moved to Tennessee. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, he developed a lucrative law practice near Nashville. He then married a very socially prominent woman, Sarah Childress, this boosted his career. As a supporter of Andrew Jackson, he soon began to rise within the ranks of the Democratic party of Tennessee.
