In 1969, a woman named Norma McCorvey was single and pregnant. Norma lived in Texas where there were laws prohibiting abortion. She wanted to terminate her pregnancy, but was too poor to travel to another state where the laws would afford her an opportunity to have an abortion. Therefore gave birth and gave the child up for adoption.
Norma McCorvey’s adoption lawyer introduced her to two female Texas Law School students. These females challenged the state statute on abortion. It was at this time that Norma McCorvey became known as “Jane Roe”. The District Attorney at that time in the Dallas County District was Henry Wade.
