Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, The Scarlet Letter is one of America’s classical pieces of literature. The beauty of the Scarlet Letter, which exemplifies the brilliance of his writing, is that each time its read, the reader can identify a different plausible theme. One themes that is evident throughout the novel is: Good vs. Evil. Hawthorne implies that the Puritans were people who believed the world was full of sin and their beliefs were their only defense in a place where the battle between good and evil, was a never-ending one. Hawthorne shows the Puritan beliefs to be the good in the battle and sin to be the evil in the battle. Hawthorne’s symbolic use of colors demonstrates the Good vs. Evil battle theme perfectly.
