The Santa Fe Case

At an independent school district in Santa Fe, Texas, football is considered a very important institution in which a prayer usually initiates. In 1998, a Mormon and Catholic family brought a lawsuit against the school district, objecting to the Christian prayers being given before each game. The U.S Court of appeals in New Orleans, Louisiana declared the prayer to be unconstitutional. Sim Lake, a federal district court judge from Texas, said the prayers should be allowed because prohibiting it would be the same as state sponsored atheism, the belief in no god.
