A View from the Bridge was written in 1955 and was inspired by the experiences Miller had when he worked on the docks as a longshoreman. His friend, who was a lawyer, told him a story about a longshoreman, who betrayed two of his own relatives (who were living illegally in his home) in order to break up a marriage between one of the brothers and his niece. Miller noted the story but did not publish it till a few years later.
