Humbert Humbert had a love. At the early age of thirteen, he met Annabel. “All at once we were madly, clumsily, shamelessly, agonizingly , in love with each other.” ( Nabokov , 12) This love was his first love. Every moment of happiness he could remember was with her. It was a joyous time for him but ended tragically when his poor Annabel died of typhus a few months later. After her death, Humbert was devastated and had never really recovered. He wanted what he had with her back. After that awful ending to his happiness he set out to find something similar, and began to have a fixation for pre- pubescent girls.
