Though many composers’ careers extended through the end of the Second World War 1945 is a good boundary in describing the start of an era in which music progressed at a fast pace and underwent a period of stylistic change. This stylistic change also brought up many issues and demands between composers and their audiences. My essay will focus mainly on the characteristics and main principles behind the avant-garde musical language that developed during this era. I will mainly refer to composers such as Boulez, Stockhausen and Cage. I will also look at Milton Babbitt’s article ‘Who Cares If You Listen’ in which he demonstrates great support for the new avant-garde theories of composition.
