The midwives must have been to very strong-minded women; Pharaoh was a mighty man, very influential and quite evil. The midwives were able to avoid the indoctrination he was diffusing among the people of Egypt and keep their wits about them. They maintained their own morals even though they were under this manipulative power, and involved in such a corrupt society.
