In "The Chrysanthemums" Steinbeck creates a realistic charater who faces a difficult choice through the use of the setting of the valley. Elisa feels trapped in a male dominant society, but she will find her inner feminine self. She seems to be a beautiful and strong woman inside and out, she just does not know this yet. Steinbeck uses the setting to develop the character of Elisa. As the plot moves on her character changes, and her ultimate choice shows who she really is.
