Benevolent Assimilation vs Philippine Independence

By comparing and contrasting McKinley’s proclamation and Agoncillo’s account of the Filipino side, I arrive at the realization that the United States should not have interfered with the Filipinos’ aim for independence. When President William McKinley proclaimed “Benevolent Assimilation” with the Philippine Islands, he claimed that the United States was to assure “…full measure of individual rights and liberties…(103)” However, McKinley’s intentions in this document of 1898 seems more like disguised colonialism.
