Oedipus the King and The Bacchae

The plays Oedipus the King and The Bacchae, both deal with the understanding of what humans can comprehend. In the play Oedipus, an oracle foretold a story of a man who would kill his father and marry his mother. In the play The Bacchae, people were told a woman named Semele was impregnated by Zeus, and no one believed her. In both of these instances, people should have listened to what they were told. In Oedipus, a plague has spread through the countryside killing many people, and crippling the kingdom. Oedipus sends his brother-in-law to ask the oracle what needs to be done to fix his lands.
