Bipolar disorder is the medical name for manic depression. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness, but it is more appropriately described as a neurobiological brain disorder involving extremes in mood. It is one of the three major affective disorders. The other two affective disorders are unipolar disorder, that is depression only, and schizoaffective disorder. Most medical researchers believe that bipolar disorder is genetic. My paper will discuss the disorder, its different symptoms, a few treatment options and information for family and friends about dealing with someone suffering from bipolar disorder.
