A character whose actions reveal much more about them than is initially obvious is Mary Maloney in Roald Dahl’s “Lamb to the Slaughter.” At the start of the story Mary was waiting for her husband’s return like any other loving wife. She had the table ready, the lamps on and the room was warm and clean. These preparations tell us that she loves Patrick very much and was excited about his return: “Each minute gone by made it nearer the time that he would come home.” This shows Mary is waiting patiently for her husband’s return.
