Abortion was legalized in 1973 when the Supreme Court decided in Roe v. Wade that it was a woman’s constitutional right to terminate her pregnancy. This right remains intact today, but is limited for minors. Young women under the age of 18 in most states are not permitted to get an abortion without parental consent. Some states even require consent from both parents. In the year 2000, approximately 19 million children under the age of 18 lived with only one parent making it very difficult for teens to satisfy this requirement.
