In the year 490 BC Pericles was born in the town Cholargus, Greece, by mother Agariste, who was a granddaughter of Clisthenes, and by politician father Xanthippus, who in the battle of Mycale defeated the Persians. (Pericles by Plutarch) They were of the tribe Acamantis and his family claimed to have descended from the Old King Nestor family. It is believed his families’ political history pushed him into his political career. His two greatest teachers were Damon the musician and Anaxagorus the philosopher.
