The skin and is derivatives (sweat and oil glands, hairs, and nails) make up a complex set of organs that
serves several functions, mostly protective.
Functions: Proctection (chemical, pysical/mechanical, and biological barriers). Regulates body
tempature, cutaneous sensation, metabolic functions, blood reservoir, and excretion.
Defintion: The integument is composed of two discrete tissue layers, an outer epidermis and a deer
dermis, resting on the subcutaneous tissue, the hypodermis.
Why it is an organ: It is considered an organ because it is formed of two or more tissues and adapted to
carry out a specific function(s).
