The countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola located in the Caribbean Sea. Haiti became the first black republic after a successful slave revolt led by ex-slave Toussaint L'Ouverture in 1804. Originally a Spanish colony the Dominican Republic gained independence in 1844. Edwidge Danticat vividly depicts the turmoil that resulted as these two different peoples attempted to coexist in such close proximity to one another in The Farming of Bones.
