Baseball was a very different game back in the day then it is now. Today baseball players will move from team to team to whomever will pay them the most money. In 1919, most players had to keep a second job just to pay the bills. Just playing baseball wasn’t enough to live on. Players played for the love of the game then, not for the love of the green like they do today.
Players salaries were very bad back when Chicago threw the 1919 World Series. And the owners of the ball clubs didn’t do much to change things.
