Everyone has to go through some hard times while growing up. The good and the bad that are experienced shapes the people into who they will be. In the novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou, Maya confronted the effects of racism and segregation at a very young age.
As Maya got older, she experienced discrimination that was more personal. For example, when she had a toothache, the dentist said, "I'd rather stick my hand in a dog's mouth than in a nigger's" (189). Even having a harsh comment like this directed at her, Maya was still able to keep her head high and think of her mother as a strong woman for standing up to the dentist.
